ITHACA, N.Y. -- The third-ranked softball team swept a doubleheader against Rochester Institute of Technology Tuesday, becoming the first team in Empire 8 history to post an undefeated conference record. The Bombers won the first game 13-0 in five innings and the second game 6-0. The Bombers have won a school-record 18-consecutive games and are one win shy of their total from last season, including playoffs. The Bombers allowed only six runs to Empire 8 opponents and had eight shutouts.
In the first game, the Bombers took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double to right center by senior first baseman
Kaitlyn Dulac (Bay View/East Greenwich, R.I). The Bombers then scored nine runs in the second inning on seven hits and five RIT errors. Junior rightfielder
Jenn Marro (Bethehem Central/Delmar) had a two-run single and senior centerfielder
Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Mystic, Conn.) hit a two-run double as the Bombers sent 12 players to the plate in the inning. The Bombers added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by sophomore third baseman
Stacey Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston). Sophomore pitcher
Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) earned her 15th win of the season, allowing one hit and striking out three in three innings. Freshman pitcher
Jessie Derbyshire (Upper Dublin/Dresher, Pa.) struck out two in two perfect innings of relief.
In the second game, sophomore pitcher
Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) improved to 14-1 on the season.
Myers had a perfect game through five innings, until second baseman
Allison Ingalls led off the sixth inning with a single for RIT.
Myers allowed only one more hit after that, a single in the seventh, in her complete-game shutout and struck out nine. The Bombers scored all of their runs in the third inning. Ithaca loaded the bases to start the inning and sophomore shortstop
Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain) drove in the first two runs with a single to right field.
Dulac hit a sacrifice fly to right field and
Bonkowski followed with an RBI double to right center. Junior leftfielder
Mel Chinigo (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.) drove in
Bonkowski with a double down the left field line and then scored on a single by
Pelesz.
Dulac extended her hitting-streak to 22 games, the longest in Ithaca history.
Dulac's
three RBI's on the day give her 100 for her career, fourth on Ithaca's all-time list. Junior catcher
Hannah Shalett (Sehpaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) went 0-for-2 in the first game, snapping her hitting-streak at 19 games.
The Bombers (30-2, 12-0 Empire 8) visit Geneseo (15-13) for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
